Sweet Potato Spicy Spirals

Picture this – after a long hard day of Momming your ass off you just want a nice big plate of curly fries.

BUT ALAS! It’s 2018, the year of potato-hating and some asshat along the line decided that potatoes are bad. Sad face!

Potatoes stole your parking space. Potatoes ate all your leftover chicken fettucini. Potatoes got your kids hooked on the Tide Pods. Naughty potatoes!

So what’s a girl to do when she’s got a craving for curly fries, and still wants to get the neighborhood Health Hipster Seal of approval?

SWEET POTATOES!

Now, before we dig in I’m going to have to specify that you want the orange fleshed sweet potatoes for these. None of that pasty-ass beige tuber nonsense. What you’re looking for is something more like a yam. In fact, it may be labeled as a yam, even though APPARANTLY THAT MIGHT BE BULLSHIT.

These are extremely tasty and work great as a side dish or a snack.

Now, I’m usually a card carrying member of the “don’t yam in my face and tell me that it’s french fries” brigade, mainly because sweet potatoes have a completely different texture and taste than OG potatoes.

This is why this recipe uses a spicy mix of seasonings- to balance out that sweet potato flavor.

This is also why I spiralized these. This gives them the chance to get a little crispier, and won’t necessarily be overwhelming with that sweet potato sweetness.

Plus I love my SPIRALIZER!

This, and my Soda Stream are definitely on my kitchen faves list. If I ever get invited to a fancy party and I get a plus one, I will throw a tux on this thing and we will dance the night away.

Sorry darling husband, but can you drop kick a root vegetable into a smooth spiral? I THINK NOT.

Recipe Time!

Sweet Potato Spicy Spirals

Spicy sweet potato curly fries that are so sinfully good, they are often considered one of the main factors that contributed to the fall of the Roman Empire #funfact (#notafact) Use orange flesh sweet potatoes for this. None of that pale regular sweet potato nonsense. I’d say use yams but apparently yams are complicated and yams aren’t really yams (or something like that).

Instructions

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees. Peel your sweet potato/yam and spiralize it.

2. Place spiralized sweet potato into a large bowL and drizzle with olive oil. Toss to coat.

3. Take your spices and mix them in a small bowl. Shake your spice mix over the spiralized yams and toss to evenly distribute.

4. Place sweet potato spirals in a shallow even layer on a baking sheet. It’s best to use parchment paper to prevent sticking.

5. Place in the oven to bake for about 20 mins. These are finicky as hell and will burn fast! Shake them around often and rotate. Show them who’s boss, but be gentle. Tell them they’re doing a great job! I check on mine and toss around about every 5 minutes or so.

Recipe Notes

  • Don’t let these burn, I mean this. Toss, turn, rotate.
  • Fuss around the stove like a foreign Granny.
  • Treat them right and they will be good to you, trust.
